About me
I am Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the University of Liverpool’s School of Law and Social Justice. Currently, I co-lead the UKRI MusicFutures creative cluster, acting as IP and AI Policy Lead and working towards strengthening Liverpool’s global music ecosystem. There, I advance rights management and metadata literacy among creators while developing licensing frameworks that inform policy discourse. My work examines the balance between creative freedom and IP protection, copyright's interface with artificial intelligence, and cultural diversity in creative industries. Core questions include: How should IP law protect human authorship amid technological disruption? How do licensing models preserve artist agency in AI environments? How can we facilitate music's convergence with other creative sectors? The MusicFutures IP Clinic and Lab provide free legal guidance to creators and generate evidence-based policy recommendations serving creative communities while advancing understanding of rights, innovation, and cultural sustainability. I co-edited Teaching Intellectual Property Law: Strategy and Management (Edward Elgar, 2023) and developed IntangAbility, an IP revision game enhancing student learning. Beyond academia, I actively engage with the media, offering insights to outlets such as The Guardian, The Washington Post, BBC, and L'Echo on intellectual property, cultural diversity, freedom of expression and creative industries.
